Immersion - Culture & Market
Traditional Artisians
On our recent trip to Gujarat, we immersed ourselves in the world of local artisans and crafters, who carry on traditions passed down through their families for 5-6 generations. We explored the intricate art of Ajrakh block printing, a traditional method that involves printing with natural dyes and hand-carved wooden blocks to create intricate, symmetrical patterns.
After a five-hour hands-on session, we created our own pieces by selecting canvas cloth, applying different dyes and designs, drying and dipping the fabric in dye chemicals twice, and finally washing it in ponds to clean and dry it one last time. Connecting with the artisans, understanding their techniques, and spending quality time with them left us with a deep respect, numerous learnings, and unforgettable stories.
Creating Ajrakh prints with local artisans deepened our respect and left us with lasting memories
The artisans' guidance has equipped us with a deep understanding of traditional craftsmanship, which will enhance our experience as we explore Kutch, the white desert. As we embark on this next adventure, we carry with us the lessons and stories shared by these skilled artisans, enriching our journey even further.
